Key projects and results

“Nature is our most valuable resource and it is not inexhaustible.”

The sustainable utilization of resources and protection of the environment to ensure the quality of life for future generations go hand in hand with value creation and the sustainable development of Blue Lagoon. A direct connection between man and nature has become a rare experience in our busy day-to-day lives. Blue Lagoon creates these connections through unique experiences with its services in Iceland and skincare products all over the world.

Environmental goals and projects

As in recent years, Blue Lagoon’s environmental goals in 2021 are reflected in the company’s environmental policy and sustainability plan. A special emphasis is placed on reducing the company’s environmental footprint with regard to greenhouse gas emissions, waste disposal and increased operational sustainability.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the year, plans were made to add additional charging stations and offer more eco-friendly transport options to and from work. At the same time, the aim was to carbon offset the door-to-door transport of the skincare products to our customers. Goals were also set for recycling and improved utilization of, for example, paper, as well as obtaining certification of the environmental management system.

“Now, more than ever before, the world is facing enormous challenges, which will in many cases have an irreversible effect on the ecosystem and life expectancy of most organisms on earth, including man. Our actions today have a significant impact on the quality of life of future generations and the protection of our precious eco-system.”

Target results

In 2021, great progress was made in the company’s environmental affairs. It started with the ISO14001 certification of its environmental management system and recognition from the Confederation of Icelandic Employers when it chose it as the Environmental Company of the Year for 2021.

Other important milestones during the year included:

  • Carbon offsets of the door-to-door delivery of products from the company’s warehouses to our customers all around the globe.
  • A decision was made to use a new office building in the capital area, which will significantly reduce the driving of part of the staff to and from work, with consequent savings on fuel and an increase in charging stations.
  • A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) started on the production of two of the company’s skincare products.
  • The number of sorting containers increased on the premises and new categories were added.
  • Number of improvement projects to reduce single-use plastics.
