Health and safety
“The safety culture of Blue Lagoon is very strong.”
Throughout the activities of Blue Lagoon, emphasis is placed on creating an environment where people, both visitors and staff, can enjoy themselves safely. The company plays an exemplary role in that regard.
Health and safety management
Physical health and mental balance are the foundation of well-being in play and work. As in previous years, employees were offered the option to exercise and improve their mental health free of charge. They were also offered appointments with the company doctor as needed, along with the services of a psychologist, health check-ups and influenza vaccinations.
Good and healthy working conditions are the foundation for employee satisfaction, which in turn boosts the satisfaction of guests. All work areas are designed with the aim of ensuring the safety and health of employees, and ways are constantly being sought to increase their comfort. The staff canteen is specially designed to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere with a wide range of nutritious food.
Within Blue Lagoon, there is a powerful security surveillance station, which monitors the entire premises of the company with the aim of ensuring the security of guests, staff, contractors, properties and buildings 24/7 every day of the year. Centralized surveillance shortens response times and boosts internal and external communication in an emergency response.
Blue Lagoon’s security team includes a strong group of lifeguards. They play an important role in monitoring guests in the baths during opening hours.
The safety and well-being of Blue Lagoon’s guests and staff are always a priority in all of the company’s operations. The entire guest experience process and staff work are risk assessed with regard to safety, health and the environment, and appropriate control measures are implemented to minimize the risk of accidents. The control measures are reflected in the design and organization of experience areas, staff training, safety rules and information to guests.
The main causes of accidents in 2021 can be attributed to the risk of falling due to slippery surfaces, e.g. due to wetness or ice. The company has analyzed the causes of these incidents, implemented measures and set improvement projects in motion to reduce this risk and prevent recurrences.
The company has defined, registered and rehearsed emergency responses to major operational risks. The risk management hierarchy is used to manage and minimize operational risk levels insofar as possible.
There are systems in place to log and respond to incidents. Central monitoring and responses, as well as maintenance and technical systems, are in place to respond to malfunctions and other incidents 24/7.

Unprecedented times
2021 continued to be marked by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and limited opening hours. Intense seismic activity in the vicinity of the Blue Lagoon manifested itself in the first half of the year and, for example, an evacuation plan had to be activated due to a sharp earthquake on February 24th. These earthquakes culminated in an eruption, which started in Geldingadalur on March 19th. The eruption ended on December 16th of last year. Blue Lagoon’s safety and health team worked in close consultation and cooperation with the authorities and response parties regarding the earthquakes. A special emphasis was placed on providing good information to employees, regarding both the earthquakes and COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort which can be considered to have improved the well-being and safety of employees in these times of uncertainty.
The first half of the year was used to, among other things, develop and implement a health and safety management system at work, in accordance with the ISO 45001 standard and the company was certified for that standard in the summer of 2021. The staff of all company units was involved in this task, and it can truly be said that this work has greatly strengthened the company’s safety culture.
